تفاصيل الوظيفة
Requirements for a 5G Welder (E6010 / E7010)
✅ Applicable Standards
Employers or test labs usually refer to one or more of the following codes for pipe welding qualifications:
✔ API 1104 – common for pipeline welding and repair welder qualification tests.
✔ AWS D1.1 / D1.1M – structural welding code that covers pipe when referenced by project specs.
✔ ASME Section IX – welding procedure and welder qualification for pressure-boundary applications.
Each standard has specific acceptance criteria and test requirements.
???? Electrode Requirements
E6010 – Typically used for the root pass because of its deep penetration and fast freeze behavior, ideal for vertical-down.
E7010 – A cellulosic electrode similar to E6010 but designed for higher strength pipe applications and also suitable for vertical down fill passes.
Duramax Welding
+1
Both are AWS A5.1 classified electrodes and work on DC+ (DCEP) polarity for best penetration.
???? Performance Test Details
These are typical components of a 5G welder qualification test:
???? 1. Test Joint
Weld a full-circumference butt weld on a pipe (often ~8″–12″ diameter depending on code and employer).
Pipe must be fixed (not rotated) — this ensures you weld all positions around the pipe.
???? 2. Technique
Root pass: usually done with E6010 or E7010
Fill / cap passes: depending on spec, the same or often E7018 in some codes — but jobs focused on downhill SMAW sometimes use E7010 for fill/cap too.
Note: Changing filler metal group or direction of travel (up/down) without requalification may invalidate the test under some standards.

???? Test Inspection Methods
After welding, the test coupon is evaluated by:
???? 1. Visual Inspection
✔ Weld appearance: no cracks, drips, lack of fusion, or excessive undercut.
✔ Smooth transitions between passes.
???? 2. Mechanical or NDT
Depending on the code being used:
Guided Bend Tests (common in AWS/ASME) — checks fusion and ductility.
Radiographic (X-ray) or ultrasonic (common in API 1104) — checks internal soundness.
+1
If these tests pass, the welder receives a Welder Performance Qualification for 5G in the specified process (SMAW) and electrodes used.
???? Qualification Scope
Once passed:
✔ You are qualified to weld in 2G, 3G and overhead positions on pipe for the tested process.
✔ You are qualified on the same electrode group and direction you tested on; changing to different electrodes or a different progression direction may require requalification.
???? Certification Validity
Many codes or employers require continuity — you must weld using the same process at least once every 6 months to keep your qualification valid.
