• Manage and supervise movement of containers under the allotted cranes to optimize crane productivity, while considering operational, commercial and safety factors, and also adhering to port policies and procedures

• Check if the locking system is auto or manual and accordingly place lasher/dowelman. Provide instructions for lashing/ unlashing, locking/ unlocking of containers along with the Lashing Supervisor

• Monitor the discharge and loading operations for a particular hatch. While loading, communicate with the tally clerk and ensure the RTIS clerk simultaneously updates locations in the system.

• Ensure presence on board during operations

• Closely co-ordinate with the quay crane operator throughout the hatch operation and ensure that the vessel stability is maintained throughout

• If the container being loaded is heavy, and it is still planned “to be stowed” on the top row in the vessel, then contact vessel planner and change location of the container in the bay

o Inform the Vessel Supervisor and coordinate with the Chief Officer about this change in location

• Direct the quay crane operator for each container location, thereby ensuring that the loading and discharge is in accordance with the stowage plan

• Inform the quay crane operator when all the containers get loaded and advise him to close the hatch cover and move to the next bay as per the crane program

• In event of heavy traffic under crane assist the tally clerk in his operations

• In absence of Tally Clerk, communicate with the Vessel Supervisor to arrange for another tally clerk, and till then manage his work

• In event of heavy traffic under crane assist the tally clerk in his operations

• If the number of containers being handled are significantly high, communicate to Vessel Supervisor for additional ITV assistance

• Coordinate with the Vessel Supervisor/ Superintendent to arrange in advance for any special gears that would be required for completing the hatch operation, and simultaneously notifying the Vessel Supervisor.

o Inspect the condition of special gear used

• Facilitate, if requested by the vessel planner or the chief officer, discharge of specific container/s post completion of loading operations

• Coordinate with the Vessel Planner to update the system when there is on-board shifting of containers

• During discharge of Out of Gauge containers, inform the Vessel Supervisor who will ensure his or Vessel Superintendent’s presence

• Ensure that the Vessel Duty Officer is informed about damaged containers, and provide him the damage report prepared by Tally Clerk, for acknowledgement and stamping

• Ensure that lashing of on-deck containers has been carried out on time and according to the chief officer’s instructions, and the lashing certificate is submitted to vessel Chief Officer for acknowledgement
